UM STUDENTS WALKED AWAY WITH TWO TROPHIES AT THE SHELL ECO-MARATHON ASIA 2012 COMPETITION

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 JULY 2012 – Two teams from the University of Malaya’s (UM) Faculty of Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering) have competed at the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2012 Competition held at the Sepang F1International Circuit on 4 – 7 July. The two UM teams managed to walk away with two trophies in hand as well as cash prizes with smiles beaming from ear to ear.

In the Prototype (Hydrogen) category, UM secured second place behind Ngee Ann University, Singapore. UM was the best Malaysian team in this category. The second vehicle which competed in the Urban Concept (Gasoline) with 16 other teams across Asia. UM came out fifth place and again UM was the best Malaysian team in this category.

This year’s competition saw 119 student entries from 18 countries across Asia and Middle East coming more prepared than before as 109 vehicles were able to pass technical inspections with the goal of being able to travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy within their sights.

This year UM saw unprecedented support from students especially those from Mechanical, Materials, Electrical and Telecommunication programmes. The undergraduates were from the 1st to 4th year while postgraduates were from Mechanical Engineering and PhD levels. They worked well together and showed a strong commitment to see these projects completed successfully. Additionally, a group of supporting staff from Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design and Manufacture, and Chemical Engineering departments had assisted the students to overcome many technical issues.
