Swinburne to study tots and technology
Researchers are investigating whether touchscreen use by young children is beneficial for their development.
The researchers, from Swinburne University of Technology, have received a Google Faculty Research Award to study whether the use of touchscreen devices is more like toy play or television in its effect on learning.
"Touchscreen apps for tots are growing in popularity, but whether these activities are good or bad for a child's development is yet to be determined," said lead researcher Dr Jordy Kaufman, founder and Director of the Swinburne BabyLab, Australia's first research centre for infant cognitive neuroscience.
"There is a popular view that TV is bad for kids and therefore tablet devices are also bad, but there has been no published research to date in this area," Dr Kaufman said.
"Right now parents are getting conflicting stories. On the one hand, there are thousands of touchscreen games which claim to aid with children's educational and mental development.
"Meanwhile, some experts warn that any screen time at all can be damaging to young children.
"Parents are understandably conflicted as to whether they should allow their children to use tablet computers and if so how often, for what duration and for what type of activities."
The researchers will study children aged between four and six, duplicating a real-world hands-on activity with a virtual activity on a tablet computer.
The Google Research Awards support cutting-edge research in areas of mutual interest. Each proposal is assessed on its impact, innovation and relevance to Google and its customers.
The Swinburne project is the only Australian-based research project to be funded in the current round.
Dr Kaufman will be discussing the impact of touchscreen applications on child development as part of Science Week activities.

Off-road motor sports a major risk for death and injury

1 August 2012

Off-road motor sport is the biggest cause of major trauma, injury and death in sport, according to a new study.

In a study analysing sport and recreation related injuries in Victoria between 2001 and 2007, researchers found major trauma, including deaths, had increased by 10 per cent each year with the highest number of deaths attributed to off-road motor sports, including motor-bikes and fishing.

Analysing data from the Victorian State Trauma Registry (VSTR) and the National Coroners Information System, researchers led by Monash University’s Dr Nadine Andrew, recorded 1019 non-fatal major trauma cases and 218 deaths during the six-year study period.

Off-road motor sports had the highest rate of major trauma, including head injury, and death with 119 cases per 100,000 each year, followed by equestrian sports (54), power boating and water skiing (15), and cycling (13). Off-road motor sports (10) had the highest death rate followed by fishing with nine incidents of drowning deaths.

Dr Andrew, from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, said the figures shouldn't discourage people from engaging in an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Much of the increase in major injuries and deaths can be attributed to increases in major trauma rates associated with off-road motor sports, cycling and Australian football,” Dr Andrew said.

“These results highlight the need for co-ordinated injury prevention, particularly within the areas most at risk and we hope it will assist sporting industries to implement programs to reduce injuries.

“It’s important to note that people involved in sport have only a small chance of trauma, injury or death so compared to the health benefits, the risk is considerably low.”

Head injury (21 per cent), was the most common injury followed by injuries to the spine (16 per cent).

Other sporting activities considered life threatening or likely to cause injury were power boating, ice and snow sports, Australian rules football and swimming. Fishing had a high death rate but no major injuries.

Prof. Dato Dr. Ir. Zaini: Working beyond conventional partnership framework in capacity building

JOHOR BAHRU, 15 JULY – UTM plays host to 10 representatives from 5 higher education institutions for the next three days for the third Global Initiaitves Partnership (GIP) meeting at its Johor Bahru campus.

The Global Initiatives Partnership (GIP) is a consortium of renowned universities from across the globe. Member institutions include the University of Kent, United Kingdom, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, University of Technology Sydney, Australia, University of Ghent, Belgium, Tongji University, China and Virginia Tech, USA. Members were represented by their respective Vice Presidents for Internationalization or Head of International Office. The UTM delegation was led by Professor Dr. Rose Alinda Alias, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic And Internationalization.

GIP’s inaugural meeting was hosted by the University of Kent (Canterbury) on September, 2010. The subsequent meeting in 2011 was held in Blacksburg, Virginia in USA.

The consortium was set up to increase international institutional collaboration by forming intimate networks that facilitate cross-border cooperation, with a target to enable short and long term student mobility and research-focus activities such as publication and conferences.

Prof. Zaini Ujang, in his opening address during the meeting, explained that UTM is looking beyond the conventional framework of partnership between partner institutions. The optimal form of partnership which the university is looking forward to is niche partnerships which enable key operational and strategic issues of common interest to be identified to support capacity building of members within the partnership framework.

Citing examples of existing UTM partnership framework with renowned universities in the UK, Germany and the USA, Prof. Zaini hoped that members of the GIP network would develop partnership frameworks stimulating academic mobility of undergraduates and postgraduates between member universities during the meeting.

Throughout the 2-day meeting, the members discussed on issues on internationalisation of higher education and key strategic activities of the framework such as the “Global Studies Programme”, research summer schools and networking activities within member institutions. Key agreements were achieved on the Global Studies Programme, which is expected to be launched next year. Members will also participated in a tour around UTM and Educity @ Iskandar and attended reception dinners hosted by the UTM top management.

Sunway-TES, University of Malaya and ACCA sign agreement First in the world innovative programme for outstanding accounting students

Kuala Lumpur – Sunway-TES, a subsidiary of Sunway Education Group, University of Malaya (UM) and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) have collaborated in a milestone agreement that provides students reading the Bachelor of Accounting programme at UM with the opportunity to attain an ACCA Qualification through a unique fast-track programme.

From left to right, Helen Brand, Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof, YB Dato’ Devamany Krishnasamy, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, Lee Weng Keng, CEO, Education & Healthcare Division, the Sunway Group; Assoc Prof Dr. Che Ruhana, UM and Jennifer Lopez, Country Head, ACCA

This tripartite agreement supports Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme. Under the ETP, the accounting sector has been identified by the Business Services Lab, an outcome of the deliberations of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA), to provide business opportunities which will contribute to Malaysia’s efforts to achieve high income status.

This collaboration is also aligned to the government’s proposal that accounting graduates should have a professional qualification before admission to the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) with the aim to increase the quality of chartered accountants in Malaysia.

This collaboration was formalised at a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing ceremony held yesterday at the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, witnessed by Yang Berhormat Dato' Devamany a/l S. Krishnasamy, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Through this agreement, students in their third year of the accounting degree programme in UM who have demonstrated good potential can take up the ACCA Qualification concurrently. Those selected for this programme will have their ACCA course fees fully sponsored by participating employers which include the Sunway Group, AFTAAS, KHR, the Big 5 Professional services firms, namely BDO, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and PwC; and will also be provided internship placements.

UM accounting degree students will be able to claim nine exemptions from ACCA should they choose to register and study under this special collaboration. Thus, they will only be required to sit for the remaining five ACCA papers at the Professional level.

This unique initiative supports the Talent Roadmap 2020, launched recently by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak which sets out Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad’s (TalentCorp) strategic focus and initiatives till 2020 in addressing Malaysia’s talent needs arising from the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

To ensure Malaysia’s domestic talent is optimised in line with the country’s economic needs, the Talent Roadmap 2020 prioritises enhancing school-to-work transition through programmes which provide graduates in-depth and more focused work exposure at the university level. Initiatives like the Sunway-TES’ ACCA Professional Certification via the Structured Internship Programme (SIP) serve the dual purpose of bridging the gap between academia and industry while encouraging greater employer participation in terms of preparing graduates to be workplace-ready.

“For Malaysia to emerge as a developed nation and a global talent destination by 2020, we must recognize the importance of optimizing our home-grown talent, who are our most precious resource,” said Johan Mahmood Merican, CEO of TalentCorp.

He added that TalentCorp is working closely with the relevant stakeholders including industry partners, professional certification bodies, and higher education institutions (HEIs) to deliver 12,000 structured internship opportunities annually across key sectors, in order to meet the overarching goal of preparing graduates to be market ready and capable of meeting the demands of the 12 NKEAs driving Malaysia’s growth.

ACCA chief executive, Ms Helen Brand said, “Strategic and valuable partnerships such as the one formalised today is one the foundations behind ACCA’s ability to flourish and produce qualified ACCA graduates with talent, drive and ambition. These graduates – polished, ready and primed with state-of-the art technical knowledge and skills – are a testament to the power of collaborative partnerships and are the best advertisement we can possibly have for ACCA, University of Malaya and Sunway-TES.”

Students will attend classes conducted at Sunway-TES, an ACCA approved learning partner – Platinum status. Platinum is the highest and most prestigious level of approval granted by ACCA to learning partners around the world, and is granted only upon fulfilling stringent performance indicators such as pass rates and student support services. Sunway-TES has achieved the Platinum (formerly Premier Plus) since 2003 and is the only institution in Malaysia to achieve this accolade for 9 years in a row.

Sunway Group’s Founder and Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said, “For the past 18 years, Sunway-TES is always at the forefront of the accountancy and finance education to ensure graduates of Sunway-TES are meeting industry demand. In today’s globalised world, it is certainly an advantage for local public university graduates to gain a world-class professional qualification. We are glad to be part of this exciting collaboration, in support of Malaysia’s agenda to produce 60,000 professional accountants by 2020.”

UM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs), Professor Datuk Dr. Rohana Yusof also shared the same enthusiasm for this collaboration. She said, “This is a bold and timely step taken by UM, ACCA and Sunway-TES. It shows that we are very much in touch with the changing demands of the highly skilled labour market, the mobility needs of our young students and their education aspirations generally. The demanding standards set and the applied skills acquired help to produce accountants which employers can feel confident to employ. This is a rational step purely based on the academic merits of the ACCA Qualification. I believe it will go a long way in promoting young professionals in Malaysia for developing a career in accountancy, increasing their market employability and contributing to social and economic development goals of Malaysia in the long run.”

This is the first time that all three parties have collaborated in such an agreement, which clearly aims to develop the technical skills and competency of accountants and finance professionals in Malaysia, and address the matter of talent shortages within the industry.
